RIGHT HAND SIDE A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a stylized scarlet "olla" (Mexican water flask) bearing a black arrowhead throughout charged with a gold hawk's head erased facing sinister with black details on beak and brow; overall across the base of the device is a black tripartite scroll inscribed with "VIRTUE HONOR REWARD" in gold letters. Symbolism The red shape of the device, a stylized "olla" (Mexican water flask), is adapted from the Iowa Army National Guard shoulder sleeve insignia and underscores the heritage of the unit. The arrowhead commemorates the unit's World War II service campaigns and awards. Black denotes constancy and durability; red, symbolizes sacrifice, valor, and reflects the color of the Meritorious Unit Citation award. The golden hawk's head highlights the organization's home location, Iowa, and refers to Iowa being called the Hawkeye State. Background The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved on 13 October 2006.
