- An Original Watercolour – Unframed Several years ago a client in Canada commissioned me to paint a number of watercolours of ancient Roman architecture. The collection included some of Rome’s aqueducts. This is one of the original preparation watercolour paintings I did at the time of Rome’s Aqueducts. It’s of Aqua Claudio on Palatine Hill. The Claudio Aqueduct is the eighth and the most important aqueduct in Rome, Italy. Its construction was began in 38 A.D by Emperor Caligula and completed in 52 A.D by Emperor Claudius, after whose it was named. Aqua Claudia supplied fresh water to Rome from springs located 45 kilometres away. A remarkable feat of engineering.
