I recall a birthday afternoon out one November where my wife and I enjoyed a light lunch at the Ship Inn at Low Newton. Afterwards we took a pleasant walk along the beach heading towards Dunstanburgh Castle. Before the light bagan to fade completely I stationed myself in the dunes and hurried off a simple watercolour sketch of the castle to record the colour and light for this studio work painted on rough hand made Fabriano Esportazione watercolour paper which is no longer being manufactured. The very rough surface is superb to paint on in watercolour, allowing you to create amazing textures and “wet on wet” effects.
