It came from a manuscript written by Richard Tarrant Bailey Junior, which was headed on one side of the title by the words ‘Composed by Joe Morley’, and on the other side ‘Remembered by Tarrant Bailey Jr.’ Since then I have acquired a recording of Morley himself playing the piece in about 1918. The original recording was made by Richard Tarrant Bailey Senior on a cylinder machine, so despite some excellent modern reproduction techniques being applied, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between Morley’s banjo chords and the piano accompaniment. It is well-known that professional players would often ‘improve’ published solos, and Morley himself, in his public appearances, would add little ‘fingertricks’ to his own compositions, much to the delight of his audience, who would go home and try to emulate them; so it is not surprising that Tarrant Bailey’s version is different from the Morley recording. With care, and much repetition of short phrases, it has been possible to produce this publication ‘as played by the composer’, so that you, too, can emulate Morley in your own home.
