A BANJO REVEL https://cliffordessex.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/A-Banjo-Revel-mp3.mp3 This is a very rare Morley composition, published in 1927 as Larking’s Banjo Budget No. 1, and including a second Banjo and Piano part. It is a fairly simple piece, both from a technical point of view, and musically, so that the note at the heading: ‘Play at a good pace’ is important. The four sections are in G, E minor, and C major, — all easy keys on the banjo — and Morley introduces typical effects, such as Thumb Rasps, Bridge Rasps and a Drum, or Vellum Tap to enhance the ‘revels’. It is fun to play and, as mentioned, a rarity, because Larking appears to have been a very minor music publisher, and his Banjo Budget only seems to have extended to two published solos, so very few banjoists are likely to have a copy of this one. (For those interested, Larking’s Banjo Budget No. 2 was ‘Marche Vivacité’, for solo banjo and piano, by Jan Wien. He was a brilliant banjoist, and the piece is technically difficult, but not likely to appeal to a non-player. Hardcopies £3.00 plus postage. Download £2.00 UK post £1.50 (Royal Mail 2nd Class).
