Description The electric Brighton Belle Pullman train seen in the early 1960s passing beneath the North Downs Way near Redhill. The Brighton Belle was the Pullman train first operated by the Southern Railway and later British Railways. Designated 5BEL, these three five coach electric multiple units (EMU) ran from London’s Victoria Station to Brighton. It was the flagship of the Southern Railway’s third rail electrification project which had begun in 1931. The world’s only electric all-Pullman service ran every day from 1933 until 1972.
